Does cervix effacement & dilation check hurt?

Ummm. I don't know how to put this, but, I'm having a home birth with a midwife. How do they check for effacement and dilation without sticking their whole freaking hand into your birth canal? I'm mean, that's gonna hurt like heck, right? My 'stuff' is sensitive and doesn't like getting stretched much! Your probably thinking 'then why are you having a baby?'. I Mean, I just don't like the thought of all that probing. Seems like I'd hurt like heck!
