Couldn't find cervix? 40 weeks and 3 days?

I wanted to check my cervix to see how it is doing in terms of dilation/effacement. When I am not pregnant, it is always very easy for me to find and identify my cervix. Yesterday, I couldn't really find anything that was recognizable as my cervix, however, I did feel a lot of squishy tissue. I'm thinking that it is either that my cervix was so high and closed that I couldn't even reach it, OR, it is so soft and low that I couldn't differentiate it from my vaginal tissues. Any thoughts?
