Name of a book from the 90's?

I read a book during the 90's, but I can't really say when. I want to say it was 1994 and on. It was about a boy who had been dared or jinxed into being quiet. Apparently, he turned into a selective mute and nobody knew that the dare was the reason. There was also a girl who fell in love with him. I think at the end of the story he is playing a board game with her family during Christmas (maybe not?). I was wondering if anybody knew the title and author of this story? I've been searching for it for years and I can't find it. Thanks!
