How can you make a shy guy talk to you more and possibly like you without coming off as too excited?

There's this kid I've known for a while. He's extremely shy and quiet and has a few friends that he's comfortable with but he still doesn't talk to anyone very often. I think I kinda like him and I want to talk to him and make him feel comfortable around me but I don't know how to start without coming off as strange or too excited. I've talked to him a couple of times casually but he didn't seem to respond much. I really want him to talk to me more and feel comfortable so I can maybe get somewhere with him, can someone help? By the way, we are both in high school and band geeks haha (we're really not geeks but we're band kids)
