How to check your own cervix for dilation?

Ok so I've heard a lot of women do this. I have tried but I don't know where my cervix is. I don't feel any opening or hole. I am 1 cm dilated. Is your cervix far back inside? Do you need to put your finger as far as you can? I feel a big hard lump almost as soon as I insert my finger but don't feel any opening. Is it that hard to do? Serious answers please.
