Why check for dilation at 36 weeks?

I am almost 36 weeks, going tot he Dr today. She told me last time she would do a vaginal exam at this appointment to check for dilation and effacement. My question is, everything I read says that you can be dilated and effaced for weeks before delivery or for no time at all, so whats the point in even checking now?
